Minoan Pottery: Group Project and Presentation

Procedure for the Minoan Pottery history segment:

  1. Go to the site below and read the web pages on Minoan Pottery: A History by Andrea Mulder-Slater.

Minoan: Page 1 Minoan: Page 2 Minoan: Page 3

  1. Your teacher will assign one of the sections to complete or if you are simply wanting to learn about Minoan Pottery on your own, you can complete each of the activities yourself. It's fun to print out the pictures of the pottery, laminate them and arrange them while creating your presentations. Be sure that you are just using your images for educational purposes and not violating any copyright laws.

Be thorough and accurate in your answers on the worksheet as this is much of the data you will use to create your presentations.

  1. When you have completed your section of the worksheet, you will get together with other members in your group and decide how to best teach your section to the rest of the class. You will each rehearse this once to your group.

  2. Your teacher will divide you into 2 groups of 6 as shown below. [This assumes that each group would have 6 members. Modify it according to how many students you are working with.]

Group Two

  1. Each numbered pair will teach their page to the rest of their team. Your team members will assign points to you for this and your other participation in the group.
  2. Next, you will work in your group to create your group presentation which will include:
  • A PowerPoint presentation delivered to the rest of the class that includes:
    • a map and physical description of Crete
    • the main facts of the time periods covered including their names and pictures of the pottery made and descriptions of the types of designs used.
    • a credits page which includes any websites, books or articles used in presentation. [Check out the extra links for Minoan history if you like.]
  • A handout which:
    • briefly outlines the main facts of that particular history
    • includes a map,
    • includes time periods covered,
    • includes an example of pottery from each period.
  • A timeline on your group's segment of history that is explained as part of the presentation. The large erasable time line will be given to you to use and you must label it and stick on appropriate images in the appropriate places. [Beware, once you have arranged it your teacher may come along and mix them up again. Be prepared!!] You can use this diagram to make your timeline.

Together, your group will present "The History of Minoan Pottery" to the class while videotaping each other.

  1. When you have finished your presentations, with the help of your teacher, make up a test on this assignment. Your teacher will make any modifications needed and implement it the following day.

  2. Fill out your rubric* [ms word format] [rich text file format] and your lesson assessment and turn them in.

* A rubric is a tool that is used to evaluate a lesson.
