The Mimbres
The Mimbres are usually thought to have been a part of a larger group
of people called the Mogollons. These native people lived along the
Mimbres river in small villages. They are called the Mimbres after a
cluster of mountain peaks by that name along the border of Arizona and New
Mexico.
Archeologists have found evidence that they were farmers and hunters in
what is now eastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, a rather
mountainous region.
They developed pit houses and later dwelt in

The Mimbres left evidence of a rich spiritual life in their art. Today,
we can look and speculate the meanings of their rock carving and etchings,
called petroglyphs or gaze in wonder at the images depicted on their
amazing pottery, considered to be the finest North American ceramics up to
