The Mimbres

The Mimbres are usually thought to have been a part of a larger group of people called the Mogollons. These native people lived along the Mimbres river in small villages. They are called the Mimbres after a cluster of mountain peaks by that name along the border of Arizona and New Mexico.

Archeologists have found evidence that they were farmers and hunters in what is now eastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, a rather mountainous region.

They developed pit houses and later dwelt in pueblos. Find out more about how they lived here:

The Mimbres left evidence of a rich spiritual life in their art. Today, we can look and speculate the meanings of their rock carving and etchings, called petroglyphs or gaze in wonder at the images depicted on their amazing pottery, considered to be the finest North American ceramics up to that time.
