Course Syllabus

During this course we will study the following:

  • The vocabulary and language of ceramics

  • Art criticism and theories of art as they apply to ceramics

  • Aesthetics

  • Use of media, methods and techniques to create ceramic pieces

  • Historical periods of ceramic art

PREREQUISITES:

  • Students are expected to know and use the elements and principles of design as covered in the Introduction to Art class in their work.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ceramic Art Notebook -- You will keep a notebook containing all handouts and notes taken on reading assignments, lectures, films and demonstrations.

  • Participation/Life Skills* -- Be present for class, take part in discussions, make efficient use of time during class work sessions.

  • Competence -- You should demonstrate competence by completing all sketches, work sheets and major assignments.

  • Responsibility -- Be responsible for tools, supplies and the studio work area.

GRADING:

Rubrics are used to grade each project. Standards for quality and creativity are high.

  • 50% -- Projects and major assignments

  • 10% -- Tests and quizzes

  • 25% -- Class work such as worksheets and notes and Notebook checks (notebooks must be in order).

  • 15% -- Final Exam

Incomplete assignments will be averaged as a "0".

* Life skills would include using good manners with your classmates, not interrupting the class or in any way preventing the goal of learning, bringing the appropriate materials to class ( pencils, assignments, etc.), helping with clean-up, etc.
